Schuh Kids

Description

Carbon emissions, released into the atmosphere, can be calculated for every process that schuh engages in as a company and retailer. We look at ways to offset the total of these emissions by investing in verified projects that can reduce global carbon emissions by at least the same amount.

We complete an annual carbon assessment, conducted by qualified environmental consultants, which measures all of the carbon emissions associated with operating our business. As well as measuring the emissions from the energy used to power our DCs, stores, and offices, the fuel used to run our company vehicles, all types of company travel and accommodation, shipping products to and from our stores and transporting schuh products to the UK, we also include the emissions for delivering parcels direct to customers (delivery of your order). The result is a carbon footprint expressed as a number, in tonnes, or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). We measure and report on our footprint each year, find ways to reduce it and offset any balance to become a ‘carbon neutral’ organisation. In addition, we measure the emissions released from making and recycling our mail bags and offset these in a similar way. The offsetting projects chosen can include renewable energy generation, improving energy efficiency, reducing deforestation and planting more trees. In 2022 and 2023 we funded projects that generated clean hydro energy in Turkey, protected forests in Brazil, provided energy-efficient stoves in India and the generation of Biomass clean energy in Brazil. In 2024 we funded reforestation projects in Ghana and in Uruguay.

As part of our continuing drive to improve our sustainability further, schuh is working with Worldly (also known as the Higg Index) to gain a better understanding of our global carbon emissions. This involves reporting from the factories that manufacture our own schuh branded products and those factories used by our brand partners, wherever possible. By working with suppliers in this way, schuh helps them to improve their sustainability as well and it also gives us the ability to calculate carbon emissions for all our products and the processes required to make them.
